Mendeley 04 – How to add a reference manually

You can add references manually as well. In order to do that, follow these steps.

1.  Use the desktop application to import a file / pdf

  • Open the desktop application
  • If you have the reference in PDF format on your computer, click on the upload image (top menu)

  • A pop-up will appear
  • Choose the file you want to upload
  • It will be imported into Mendeley
  • Check if it was imported by following these steps.


2.  Use the desktop to enter all fields manually

You can add all information manually by following these steps:

  • Click top of screen (Apple computer) on File
  • Click on Add Entry Manually

  • A pop-up window will appear

  • Complete all fields
  • Remember to Change the Type if it is not a journal article
  • Remember to save.

3.  Use the web-based Mendeley to add a reference manually

  • Go to and sign into your account
  • In top grey menu, click on blue +Add
  • Click on Add entry manually

  • A pop-up will appear

  • Complete all fields needed
  • Remember to change type if not a journal article
  • Click on SAVE to save the reference
  • Check if the reference was added


4.  Use the web-based Mendeley to import a PDF or other file

  • Click on All documents

You can also follow these steps to upload under:

  • My publications?
  • Folder (create one if needed)?
  • Group?




















  • Just drag-and-drop the file from your computer anywhere in the space where all your references are displayed
  • Check if it was imported.

Please note: If you share references in a group, it might be available only in a group. Rather share it under all documents and drag-and-drop it in a group afterwards.

    Just a quick comment about the “Please note” at the end of this page, it seems as though some of the sentence is missing?
    Otherwise, a useful referencing reference.
